Everybody’s Tuning In to the American Idol Finals on Satellite TV
While previous generations had talent search programs like ‘Star Search,’ today’s global viewing audience turns into programs a little more fine tuned. Dancers may enter ‘So you Think you can Dance,’ chefs can enter ‘Top Chef,’ designers ‘Project Runway,’ and singers, of course, ‘American Idol,’ or ‘Latin American Idol,’ or ‘Australian Idol,’ or a host of other singing idol programs. The fascination with undiscovered singing talent has gone wild on a global scale, and it’s hard to peg exactly why. Surely it has to do with the rags to riches stories that most of the winning contestants are able to live. Partially it probably has to do with the purity of singing talent- you’ve either got it, naturally, or you don’t. At least partly, it also surely has to do with the attractive, young, contestants that always seem to make it to the stage. no matter why, more voters are tuning into their satellite TV and casting a vote for their favorite Idol contestant each season than are heading out to cast a vote for president. This season is sure to be no exception.
Many viewers around the globe are excited to tune in to the final of American Idol, the US original, coming up soon on Fox. This year the final spectacle will go out with high definition picture and sound with the final two contestants competing for the top prize of this year’s American Idol, Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze. The recent cut of the shaggy haired surfer guy with a country twang, Casey James, came as a shock to many and a huge disappointment to young girls everywhere. Widely criticized for having more sex appeal than singing talent, it seemed that it was finally time for James to go. probably the biggest moment of his Idol run was when judge Kara DioGuardi requested he take off his shirt, making for great reality satellite TV, but poor musical entertainment.
Now it’s up to two contestants to battle things out in front of a satellite TV audience of millions. Bowersox is a 24 year old singer and guitar player from Toledo, Ohio, and notably a mother. Another 24 year old, DeWyze, was a paint sales clerk in Mount Prospect, Illinois before heading to Hollywood for his Idol run. while Crystal has been consistently amazing, DeWyze has earned the admiration of women, and men too, everywhere with his singer-songwriter guy with a guitar vibe. The earthy, laid back, bluesy vibe of Bowersox is real and refreshing to many, making the distinct styles of the two artists a real point of contention. what both artists have done right is to take the judges’ comments to heart and used the program to learn and grow. Getting up on a stage that big in front of not only a vast studio audience but a global television viewing audience of millions is downright nerve racking. no matter which contestant comes out the ‘Idol’ they will surely both be winners in the long run. The kind of fame and notoriety that being an American Idol runner-up brings is undeniable. however, the name of the actual winner seems to be the one that actually comes up in conversation, on the radio, and on television again and again.
